Grand Union, 111 Kennington Rd, London, SE11 6SF
A few weeks ago after attending the Louche press day in SW11, upon walking back to the train station that undesirable hunger pain struck in our stomachs, so we decided to hurry into the first space that offered some sort of reasonably priced food. That just so happened to be the Grand Union situated just up the road from Lambeth North station.
The promise of a lunch time £6.50 burger and soft drink deal on the chalkboard outside had us running inside instantly. Essentially the Grand Union is a pub with grub, but is more aesthetically pleasing than your local Wetherspoon's. The mismatched, kitsch interior of the Grand Union instantly won me over as did the old, wonky floorboards which had me performing a balancing act on my chair whilst trying to eat a burger. It's safe to say it certainly has a quirky charm about it.
Now, I have to apologise for the photo of the half-eaten burger with a lipstick stain on it. I didn't actually plan to do a write up on this particular joint, but after a couple of bites into my burger which was surprisingly delicious for the price I just knew I had to blog about it. So, I whipped out my camera and snapped my half eaten patty in a bun before devouring the rest of it in record time.
James and I both opted for the bacon cheeseburger, which was an extra £1 or so on top of the £6.50 lunch time deal. Each burger had a double smashed patty inside, which was a bonus for the price point. Although the patties were quite thin, they were absolutely delicious and more importantly were freshly made. This was something I was not expecting from which, upon first glance, seemed like a chain pub establishment from the outside.
It was a pleasant surprise and I thoroughly recommend a visit if you are in the area. The Kennington branch happens to be ridiculously close to the Imperial War Museum and would make a perfect lunch time stop. The £6.50 burger & soft drink deal is only available between 12-3pm, with burgers jumping up to a little more pricey £10 after this time.
